Right-hander Casey Mize (1-1, 3.58 ERA), who will start the series finale for the Tigers, pitched well in his latest outing. He held the Houston Astros to one run and five hits in six innings on Friday. It was a bounce-back performance, as he allowed five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the New York Yankees in his other May start.  Left-hander Trevor Rogers (0-6, 6.57 ERA), Mize's mound opponent, has endured two miserable May outings. He surrendered eight runs and eight hits in 2 1/3 innings to the Oakland A's on May 4. He then gave up five runs (four earned) and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings against Philadelphia on Friday.

Phillies starter Suarez will get another chance at continuing his impressive start today evening when the Phillies host the Mets. Suarez (7-0, 1.50 ERA), who threw a 112-pitch complete game April 16 against the Colorado Rockies, has pitched at least seven innings four times this season. The latest instance was in an 8-2 win at the Miami Marlins on Friday, when Suarez struck out nine and allowed three hits in seven scoreless innings. It was Suarez's fourth scoreless outing of the season after he tossed one last season and six in 2022.  The Phillies are 22-5 in their past 27 games and became the first team to reach 30 victories when they followed a 5-4 win over the Mets in 10 innings Monday with a 4-0 triumph.

Gasser (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will be opposed by left-hander Martin Perez (1-2, 3.60). Gasser allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings in an 11-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. He became the first pitcher in franchise history to throw at least six scoreless innings and issue no walks in his debut. Gasser, acquired in the 2022 deadline deal that sent All-Star closer Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres, struck out four and hit a batter in his 79-pitch debut.  Perez, who will be making his ninth start, allowed four runs in five-plus innings in his latest outing but did not get a decision in the Pirates' 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on May 8.  In three career appearances, including two starts, against the Brewers, Perez is 0-1 with a 5.94 ERA.

The New York Yankees are getting hot. They have won eight of their last ten games including a series win in Tampa Bay this past weekend. The Yankees are solid on the road, standing five games above .500 after a 5-1 win on Tuesday.  Yankees’ starter Marcus Stroman has actually been more effective on the road where he has registered a solid 3.52 ERA and a 1-0 record on the season. Also, the Yankees have won in four of his last five outings. Pablo Lopez issued a poor 5.84 ERA in April and the Yankees are one of the better squads in the entire MLB when hitting against righties, posting a remarkable .775 OPS against righties on the season.

The Yankees struggled against Ryan last season but that was partially due to the team's frequent strikeouts. They struck out 17 times in 14 innings over his two starts against the Yankees. This year, however, the Yankees are sixth in baseball in fewest strikeouts per game. The likes of Soto and Verdugo also gives the Yankees more potent lefties to throw at Ryan in this game. Additionally, Ryan has been subpar at home this season. Ryan is just 1-2 in four home starts this season with an ERA of 4.63. Yankees righty Schmidt has been outstanding on the road this season with a 2-1 record and a 1.99 ERA away from Yankee Stadium. He has averaged over five innings per start in his four road contests as well. The Yankees have won four of Schmidt's last five starts overall as well. I like the Yankees to close out this series with a win over Ryan and the Twins.
